The Barcelona City Council, through BIT Habitat and in collaboration with Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and the Barcelona Music Lab Foundation, is launching a new call for proposals to find innovative and creative solutions that enhance the user experience at the Passeig de Gràcia metro transfer between lines L3 and L4, using music in all its artistic forms.
This initiative is part of the Metro’s Centenary celebrations. Since its creation, the metro has become Barcelona’s most widely used public transport system. For this reason, the goal is to improve the user experience at one of its most representative transfer points and turn it into a more pleasant space for travelers: the Passeig de Gràcia transfer between lines L3 and L4, which spans a distance of 237 meters.
Music must be the central theme of the proposed solutions, which may be approached from different perspectives, such as behavioral insights, cultural and/or technological innovations, and various artistic forms and languages. Proposals may involve, either partially or fully, the floor, walls, and ceiling of the transfer area. Special consideration will be given to proposals that incorporate environmental sustainability, user interaction, or digital technologies.
The winning solutions will be developed and manufactured during the second half of 2025. It is expected that from November 2025, they will be tested at the Passeig de Gràcia transfer to monitor their impact over three months.
The proposed solutions must be designed as permanent installations, ready for real-world implementation. Therefore, they must include all necessary elements for installation and proper operation, both in terms of design and budget. In this regard, proposals should include the prototype design and a justified description of the following aspects:
- Research and development activities for the prototype.
- Manufacturing or creation of the prototype.
- Installation of the prototype (including all necessary elements such as electrical connections, structural components if required, etc.).
- Monitoring of the prototype’s impact.
- Dismantling of the prototype.
The project submission period opens on January 23 and closes on February 24.
The call will allocate up to €50,000 to fund the best proposal, covering 80% of the total project budget. Additionally, the three top-ranked proposals will each receive a €3,000 prize. On top of that, all winning projects will receive support in communication and dissemination as part of the Barcelona Metro Centenary celebrations, as well as connections with the music industry ecosystem.
